It is the only U.S site to make the list. The Overlook boasts “Restaurant Row,” BBC recently named Pittsburgh as one of the top 10 destinations for foodies. There are three options to get to the Overlook:Īny way you take to the Overlook boasts impressive views and scenery. The Overlook runs the length of Mount Washington and provides vantage points of Pittsburgh’s beautiful Skyline. These inclines allowed not only people but also horses and goods to be sent up the hill more easily, spurring the development of the Mt. In the 1870s, several inclines were built to ascend the hill. The steep hill, however, was hard to climb even with the assistance of switchbacks and stairs. Mount Washington was used as a strategic vantage point for early settlers and, by the early 19 th century, was known as Coal Hill after it was settled by immigrant factory workers. The Overlook, as it is called by locals, is located on Mount Washington, a 450-foot hill that is popular among residents and tourists alike. You can see our route here on the map below. The Grandview Overlook boasts the perfect view of Pittsburgh’s Golden Triangle. We visited Grandview on our second day of our New River Gorge Driving Tour. This trail is fairly flat with a couple side trails to overlook platforms. When the Castle Rock Trail ended, we took trail #5 back towards the Visitors Center to return to the parking lot. The Grandview section of the park includes overlooks of the New River, a visitor center open seasonally, five hiking trails, ranger-led walks and talks, summer. I loved the rock formations of this cliff.Īnd you even get a peek at the river below. The rhododendrons create a canopy in some places along the trail. I would say the only reason I was able to do this trail was because we took it slow and my husband held my hand the whole way =) At some points, the trail can be no more than a foot wide. The trail follows a ridge line with sheer drop offs on the other side. I will say that this trail is very difficult and not for children. I loved hiking this trail since it was rocky and provided a really neat experience. The Grandview Overlook is also located within the impressive Emerald View Park, a 257-acre park that consists of the Grandview Scenic Byway, and three historic spaces the Grandview Overlook, Olympia, and Mount Washington. 6 miles, it is very strenuous and challenging. The other trail that we hiked was trail #4, the Castle Rock Trail. 5 mile trail that leads through the dense forest and even lets you climb through a cave-like tunnel. The first trail we hiked was the Tunnel trail which is a. We also hike a couple trails at Grandview as you can see from the map below. While we were visiting the park, the road to this overlook was closed so the only access to this overlook was via a 1.6 mile out and back trail. There is also another overlook, Turkey Spur. When you look to the left, you can just barely see the small coal town of Quinnimont at the bottom of the gorge where the first coal was shipped out in 1873. The main overlook offers a panoramic view of the “horseshoe” in the gorge below. It is located just 15 minutes from Interestate 64 near the town of Beckley. Grandview is a beautiful area located in the New River Gorge of West Virginia.
